People call the Earth the “living planet” for many different reasons. First of all, all life on Earth depends on the environment and resources of our planet. For example, both plants and animals need light, water, and nutrients from the soil to grow and be healthy. “One planet living” is a good way of living for the planet. Put another way; this means that the person’s actions do not hurt the ecosystem and do not use up all of the Earth’s resources.
What does it mean for one planet to be sustainable?
To live in a good way for the planet, people must not use up or damage its resources to the point where they can’t be fixed. There needs to be a balance between taking care of the people who live here now and making sure that future generations will be able to meet their own needs. What does it mean to think about how our actions will affect the environment and other people before we do something? When we hear “Earth,” we immediately think of a land-based planet filled with life, from the simplest microorganisms to the most complex and intelligent humans. Many things make it possible for life to exist on this planet.
Here are just a few of the many things that make our world a place where people can live:
⦁ If the Sun’s light and heat weren’t there, the Earth would be a dead ball of ice-covered rocks. It affects the weather, controls the temperature of bodies of water, and helps plants grow. Because the Earth is in the right place about the Sun, it gets just the right amount of heat and light to keep life going.
⦁ Earth is different from other planets because it gets its energy from the light of the Sun. Living things use that energy to change the elements into something that can be used. The Sun’s energy drives the process of photosynthesis, which is how plants turn light energy into food. As a byproduct, oxygen is given off, which can be used as a fuel.
⦁ Layers of gases surround the Earth. These layers are called the exosphere, thermosphere, mesosphere, stratosphere, and troposphere. Most living things could do well because there was a lot of air and the pressure in the atmosphere was good. On Earth, there is less carbon dioxide than on Venus and Mars. During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide and turn it into oxygen. This lowers the temperature of the Earth.
⦁ As a part of Earth’s stratosphere, the ozone layer protects life on Earth from the Sun’s short-wavelength, hazardous ultraviolet radiation (UVR).
⦁ The Earth’s climate is suitable for all kinds of life because there is a moderate amount of carbon dioxide. Mercury is always between -200°C and -375°C below freezing. At 375 degrees Celsius, all the water on the planet would turn into a gas, leaving the world completely dry. At 480°C, it would be too hot for any person to live on the surface of Venus. Even though the surface of Mars can get up to 25°C, it is usually frozen and can get as cold as -140°C, which is hard enough to freeze blood and water. Even colder places exist than ours.
⦁ Water makes it easy for oxygen and other chemicals that keep us alive to move around. This is why water is so essential to our survival. During the water cycle, it goes through several changes. Because water is constantly changing, it moves between the oceans, the air, and the land.
